3 Ways to Be Less Dependent on Status Symbols

Status symbols are those things we see that immediately tells us someone is doing well. Whoever owns the particular car, watch, clothing, jewelry, and so on is clearly wealthy, successful, and likes to let other people know about it.

The truth is, there is no problem with this. If someone wants to enjoy their success and put their money into objects that prove they are doing well, that’s their choice and if it makes them happy then they should certainly do it.

What if it doesn’t make you happy, though? What if you are spending money on things that you think other people will be impressed with, but that you just don’t like or feel right about? In that case, you need to learn to be less dependent on status symbols and more confident in your own success and life.

In other words, you need to be less dependent on status symbols. Here are some ways to do it.

Look at Your Motivations

Everyone, no matter what they do in life or how they do it, will need some kind of motivation to keep them going and ensure they reach their goals, whatever they might be. Sometimes, these motivations are going to include status symbols; people are going to want to work hard and be successful specifically so that they can buy a Rolex watch or drive a sports car. That’s great; having motivation is crucial for life.

What is your own motivation? Is it the status symbols we mentioned above? Or is it something else? Is it being able to spend more time with your family or is it to do something you enjoy rather than working hard at a job you don’t like? Whatever your reason, if it doesn’t include status symbols and you don’t want to buy any, then don’t. Stick with your own plans and don’t worry about anyone else’s.

Give Your Money Away

If you think you might be tempted to spend your money on status symbols because you don’t know what else to do with it, but you know those status symbols are going to make you unhappy, why not give your money away instead?

Being charitable is a great way to show your success (even if you never let anyone know what you are doing you will still know in your heart that you are doing good things), and even if you have been a fan of status symbols in the past, you might consider searching for a way to sell your Ferrari and other expensive items and give the money to those less fortunate.

The good feeling you will get from this will more than make up for the material items you are missing, and it is the best way to make something of your success.

Choose Carefully

Alternatively, as we’ve said before there is nothing wrong with a status symbol if that is what you want. However, you don’t need them all, and buying everything is going to cost you financially, plus it really won’t be as impressive as you might think.

The best thing to do if you want to celebrate your success with a material item is to think carefully about what you really want. You can choose from:

  • Property
  • Vehicles
  • Watches and jewelry
  • Clothing
  • Vacations

What you choose is down to you, but it is important that you are buying it for your own personal reasons. Doing anything solely to make other people envious and impress them won’t ever really make you happy.
